First Afripixel event - feedback from 25 May 2009 at War Museum

Posted in

Well - it happened at last!

Afripixel has held our first ever event, at the Museum of Military History in Saxonwold, Johannesburg. We had a good turnout, considering the short notice for the event, and had some great laughs and discussions on taking photos, and having fun!

Bruce Davidson presented a short video on the work that he has done on the Gorillas of the remote and wild National Park in the Republic of Congo: Odzala. The amazing interaction of the massively powerful gorillas with others, as well as the demonstration of their strength was really astonishing - as was the terrible plight that they suffer from Ebola virus, which nearly wiped out the entire population in Odzala.

Bruce then followed up with a presentation of some of the photographs that he has taken in the past 17 years in areas from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Congo and DRC. These are really something to aspire to, and there was silence from the audience at the end of the presentation as we realised what is being destroyed in these sensitive areas.

Our ONE SHOT! competition drew some interesting entries, and some consternation from people who did not realise that only the first image taken on the day of the event would be considered! It makes for quite a bit of creative shooting, and some serious thinking ahead of taking that ONE SHOT! The judging was done on a scoring basis, with the following results:

First Place:
Richard Peche - who won a one day photographic course with C4 Images and Safaris.

Second Place:
Keith Carey - who won a year's subscription to Africa Geographic Magazine

Joint Third Place:
Rick Hogben - who won a Gorillapod

and
Alex Putter - who also won a Gorillapod

Other entries were also considered:
Mike Dodds:

Hennie Bezuidenhout:

Shane Edgar:

Sony South Africa's Jason Smith was also present, and brought along samples of the newly released A230, A330 and A380 camera bodies for us to all look at and play with, as well as some fantastic Sony and Carl Zeiss lenses, including the newly released 18-55 SAM to try out. This was one of the first opportunities for some users to try out the more exotic lenses, such as the CZ24-70, and the 70-400mmG lens. Jason also presented some exciting news about Sony's sponsorship for soccer events coming up soon. The SOCCERGRAPHY competition which is currently running is a great opportunity for everyone to participate in this competition, with great prizes leading up to the FIFA Soccer World Cup on South Africa in 2010.
